Book Jacket: "A Thousand Splendid Suns is a breathtaking story set against the volatile events of Afghanistan's last thirty years-from the Soviet invasion to the reign of the Taliban to post-Taliban rebuilding-that puts the violence, fear, hope, and faith of this country in intimate, human terms. It is a tale of two together by the tragic sweep of war, where personal lives-the struggle to survive, raise a family, find happiness-are inextricable from the history playing out around them..."

Taryn's Review: This is a stunning book. Khaled Hosseini's book is a journey of happiness and heartache, life and loss, destruction and death. There were two main characters in the book, Mariam and Laila, and each woman left an impact on me. I found myself wondering about their fate during the times I had to put the book down (I was barely able to!).

Mariam and Laila were raised in two different generations where each experienced a different Afghanistan, yet when they were brought into the same tumultuous life both privately and publicly, they proved themselves to be remarkable women in a world where women weren't to be seen nor heard. This is a must-read in my opinion, but be warned...your heart will break at times and tissues need to be within arm's reach. Everyone should read this book; it's truly an amazing work.
